It is a major point of pride that my personal life is exactly that: My PERSONAL life. While I have a Facebook, Twitter, Myspace, Friendster, Livejournal, etc – I decided a long time ago that my “real life” was going to have some components that were just not designed to be plastered all over the Interwebz.

This is a slight follow-up to the “You are an asshole if your facebook is cluttered with pictures of sonograms, children, pets, or nature” column from yesterday. What trumps ALL of that is the “Person who changes their relationship status every time they have a minor disagreement with their significant other.”

"I swear... That's NEVER happened before."

Here’s my first question: What the fuck are you doing with them? Look, I can understand if you have been married for 10 years, you have children, etc – Sure, you should try a bit harder to tough it out, and not be a selfish asshole. If you are 21 and have no ties beyond going halvesies on an XBox… Well maybe it’s ok to occasionally put YOUR happiness first.

Here’s my second question: How big of an asshole do YOU look like to the world when every week you are bitching and moaning about what a shitty relationship you have… But you never leave. If I got food poisoning over and over at a restaurant, but I KEPT GOING BACK – whose fault is it? Everyone has the occasional speedbump in their relationship. Most people cope with that by fantasizing about a life where the grass is greener. That’s what has me creating scenarios where I am flying to Vermont to see a girl that in “real life” wouldn’t give me the time of day. That’s what has us thinking that some girl in Ohio is going to drop everything to come visit and you’ll fall madly in love and leave your mundane, petty lives behind.

People judge. It’s human nature. I’m just going to do whatever I can to not give free ammo to people to look at me and think poorly. For the handful of you who actually know my personal life, please consider that a compliment. I’m a very public person, so having something private that I can share with my loved ones is important to me. Maybe that is why I am so aware of people bashing their boy/girl in an open forum.
