Welcome to the new GOP: Same as the old GOP.

In a somewhat surprising move, Pennsylvania Republican Governor Tom Corbett has declined Medicaid expansion, making him the first governor of a blue state to do so. Corbett reportedly wanted to take some of the pressure off of the eight Republican Senators who voted (again) against the Violence Against Women Act by reminding everyone that while the GOP still hates women, they REALLY hate them if they are poor.

“At this time, without serious reforms, it would be financially unsustainable for Pennsylvania taxpayers, and I cannot recommend a dramatic Medicaid expansion,” Corbett wrote in a letter to U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius.

States are turning down the Medicaid expansion because of an outright lie about the cost to taxpayers that became a pivotal part of the Affordable Care Act debate. Florida Gov. Rick Scott was caught using imaginary numbers to justify his state’s refusal to implement the program, and it appears that Gov. Corbett is following the same method of justification.

The reality is that the federal government picks up 100% of the cost until 2020, and then continues to provide 90% of the funding. Corbett says while that may be true, he doesn’t think that the federal government will come up with the money. Using that logic, Gov. Corbett is about to fire every policeman and teacher in the state and close down all educational facilities because hey, there just is no way to know if funding is going to be there in 2020.

So to the millions of men, women, and children who have to continue living without any type of basic medical coverage in PA – Don’t worry! Your governor is a man of principle, and those convictions mean that he REFUSES to take free money to help you have access to a doctor! Just close your eyes – It will be just fine.
